I received an email from Justin Casey of Uneasy Pilgrim yesterday, and he was casting his vote for Baptist Generals‘ “Going Back Song” for next week’s Sunday Spotify Sixteen. Mr. Casey failed to read my post, where I showed the voting ballot featuring the eligible songs. He was under the impression that I wanted requests and for him to write commentary on the song. Well, I found his writing on the Baptist Generals song to be interesting, and even compelling. Here’s what he sent me:
A melancholy tone and subtle use of percussion and keys help drive this acoustic tune, packed with eccentric vocal delivery one expects from a Baptist Generals track. Lyrically, the song relies heavily on the single line, “Has anybody seen my bag?” The sense of defeat in his voice puts the listener right there in the room as he shuffles around in pursuit of his packed possessions. One can’t help but wonder what may be in the bag that he “put together for the leaving, going back” or exactly what it is that he is leaving behind. Nonetheless, when I caught the band live, the only piece of merch I was compelled to buy was a black tote bag with the line crudely stenciled in white.
It felt a waste to let such a compelling request go unfulfilled, so I figured that “Going Back Song” would be a perfect Throwback Thursday song. The song’s over a decade old, and even the name of the tune evokes nostalgia. Plus, it brings up the perfect opportunity to mention that Baptist Generals will be playing Saturday night at Dan’s Silverleaf along with Bosque Brown. Alas, Mr. Casey will not be attendance at that show, as he and the rest of Uneasy Pilgrim will be performing at The Underpass for the TALL CD Release Party. Cool Jacket and The Grand Damns round out this fine bill curated by Tentacle Productions. Unless, that is, he hurries back for his “Going Back Song”.
