Let the March Musical Madness Begin!

Back in 2007-2008 or so, Hunter Hawk began a cool feature on what I believe was the then Guide Live website (forgive my bad memory, as I’ve slept since then). He did a March Madness style battle of local bands. I loved the concept, and I regretted that he did not make it a yearly tradition. Well, I think it’s time to bring back the March Madness.

Below is my bracket of 32 of the strongest local musicians in our community. I opted not to include larger, more nationally known acts such as Leon Bridges, St. Vincent, and even Sarah Jaffe. Instead, these are artists that are still making new music and playing regularly around the metroplex area. I have seeded these acts as I see appropriate, though I’ve changed up the map, and in each battle, I listed the artists alphabetically. Your job is simple: vote in each battle on the artist you feel most deserving to move forward. Below you’ll find both the bracket and a voting ballot.

This round will end Thursday night at 11:59 CST, and on Friday, round two of my March Musical Madness will begin. Happy voting, and may the best act win!

  • Sunday Spotify 16: 4/30/17 Silas Nello (Feat. Jenna Clark), “Tell Me What You Need” It would be rather predictable of The Ghost to begin this playlist with a Kinsley August song.  After all, yours truly is hosting A Tale of Three Folks at Plano ArtsCenter, with Kinsley headlining the event.  The Ghost, however, does not want to be obvious [...]
  • Sunday Spotify 16: 4/16/17 Omar and the Howlers, “Hard Times in the Land of Plenty” Sad news in the Austin music world came this week when Barry “Frosty” Smith passed away. To say that his musical resume was impressive would be an understatement. He played with Soulhat, Alejandro Escovedo, Roky Erickson, and Omar & The Howlers, to name a [...]
  • Sunday Spotify 16: 4/9/17 As you’re probably aware, Pete Freedman has clearly set the record straight on how awful the Deep Ellum Arts Festival is.  I felt it was my duty to help back up his opinion, so I designed a playlist that clearly shows the lack of talent held by those playing the festival.  I apologize for having [...]
  • Ten for Your Attention This Thursday:... Back in the days when Dallas Observer used to have music editors, people would often suggest that I apply for the position.  They would say that my perspective on the music scene and my writing skills would be just what the DO needed.  And without fail, I would accept the compliment, but never tried for [...]
