Monday Mixteen: 11/20/17

inxs kick cassette

The Ghost almost never discusses music outside of the state of Texas.  Today, however, I will discuss a band that was a huge favorite of my teenage years, and still one of my all time favorite bands.  INXS were superstars of the 1980’s alternative rock movement, thanks to killer tracks like “The One Thing”, “What You Need”, “Need You Tonight”, and.. well, the list goes on and on.  Much of the band’s success could be attributed to their charismatic lead singer, Michael Hutchence.  This Wednesday marks the twenty year anniversary of his passing.  In honor of this sad anniversary, I’ve created an acrostic playlist.  For those who are not familiar with poetic terminology, an acrostic is a poem where the first letter of each line spells a word.  In this case, the first letter of each song title spells out the name of a major INXS hit, one that feels appropriate on such an anniversary.

  1. “Newport Drive”, Gaston Light
  2. “Everytime I’m With You”, Medicine Man Revival
  3. “Valium”, The Orange
  4. “England”, Andrew Holmes
  5. “Rolling Out”, Vandoliers
  6. “Ties”, Tomkat
  7. “Earful”, Oil Boom
  8. “Abandoned”, By Default By Design
  9. “Recover”, Motorcade
  10. “Up the Stats”, Devy Stonez
  11. “Safe Passage”, Falgoo
  12. “Amelia Earhart”, Andrew Delaney
  13. “Parasite”, Panic Volcanic
  14. “After Tonight”, The Speedlights
  15. “Raining in Amarillo”, Crystal Yates
  16. “Transcends”, Jackie Venson

Just in case you need it spelled out more clearly, here’s St. Vincent with Beck’s Record Club performing said hit.

  • Monday Mixteen: 7/8/19 I once received advice on the Monday Mixteen that it’s good to have a theme for the playlist.  Most of the time, I try to heed that advice.  In recent playlists, I have focused on musical genres (such as country), promoting events (like my Acoustiganza), or promoting shows happening on a given weekend.  To be [...]
  • Monday Mixteen: 7/1/19 So you all know that July 4th is Independence Day, which marks the anniversary of the U.S. declaring itself its own country.  I bet you didn’t know, however, that July 4th is National Country Music Day.  It seems appropriate, as I’m not sure there’s a musical style that’s as distinctively American is Country.  In honor [...]
  • Monday Mixteen: 6/24/19 What a weekend this has been for The Ghost.  I want to give a huge thank you to Opening Bell Coffee for letting me host my Acoustiganza there, to all the talented musicians who played, and for everyone who came and supported the local musicians. This weekend promises to be a big one for shows [...]
  • What I’ve Missed in May Alright, so May hasn’t been my month.  In fact, this is the first blog post of May, and the entire month happened with zero episodes of GOBL Radio.  Here’s hoping that the summer months are kinder to Ghosts.  In fact, you can count on more announcements, articles, etc. from GOBL in the coming days and [...]
  • The Ghostified Gathering For a week or so, Festify was all the rage on social media. It was an app that created fictitious festival lineups based on one’s Spotify listening habits. One could create a lineup based on the most listened to artists over the course of a month, six months, or one’s entire time on Spotify. The [...]
