Monday Mixteen: 11/20/17

inxs kick cassette

The Ghost almost never discusses music outside of the state of Texas.  Today, however, I will discuss a band that was a huge favorite of my teenage years, and still one of my all time favorite bands.  INXS were superstars of the 1980’s alternative rock movement, thanks to killer tracks like “The One Thing”, “What You Need”, “Need You Tonight”, and.. well, the list goes on and on.  Much of the band’s success could be attributed to their charismatic lead singer, Michael Hutchence.  This Wednesday marks the twenty year anniversary of his passing.  In honor of this sad anniversary, I’ve created an acrostic playlist.  For those who are not familiar with poetic terminology, an acrostic is a poem where the first letter of each line spells a word.  In this case, the first letter of each song title spells out the name of a major INXS hit, one that feels appropriate on such an anniversary.

  1. “Newport Drive”, Gaston Light
  2. “Everytime I’m With You”, Medicine Man Revival
  3. “Valium”, The Orange
  4. “England”, Andrew Holmes
  5. “Rolling Out”, Vandoliers
  6. “Ties”, Tomkat
  7. “Earful”, Oil Boom
  8. “Abandoned”, By Default By Design
  9. “Recover”, Motorcade
  10. “Up the Stats”, Devy Stonez
  11. “Safe Passage”, Falgoo
  12. “Amelia Earhart”, Andrew Delaney
  13. “Parasite”, Panic Volcanic
  14. “After Tonight”, The Speedlights
  15. “Raining in Amarillo”, Crystal Yates
  16. “Transcends”, Jackie Venson

Just in case you need it spelled out more clearly, here’s St. Vincent with Beck’s Record Club performing said hit.

I could have easily shied away from it, but it seems pointless to try to hide one’s deepest desires. Several readers will find [...]
  • The Ghost’s Top 101 of 2018: #5... Now that we’ve made it into the Top 50, I suppose The Ghost should add a little commentary for each track.  Fine, I can do that, especially since I only have to do that for ten songs.  Yes, it’s an unusually short playlist today.  That’s because I’ve saved the remaining Top 40 for Sunday afternoon.  [...]
  • The Ghost’s Top 101 of 2018: #1... Now that Christmas is over, and you have time to kill until New Year’s Eve, this seems the perfect time to begin The Ghost’s Year End Countdown. • Monday Mixteen: 12/3/18 It’s that time of year when the days get shorter and shorter.  While the daylight hours may be lessening, the holiday season makes it feel more eventful and often stressful.  Simply put, there’s more to do with shorter days.  The Ghost understands that time is at a premium.  Today’s Monday Mixteen is the shortest one [...]
  • VW (Video Wednesday): 9/26/18 It’s been awhile, so let’s take this VW for a drive and make sure this baby still runs.  Next week, I’ll be featuring the Ghosty nominated videos for Video Wednesday.  Today, however, The Ghost has three (relatively) new videos for your viewing pleasure. The first video is one that many suggested should be nominated for [...]
