So I’ve missed the last few Monday Mixteens, including this Monday. While I haven’t done a playlist or radio show in too long, there are several videos I feel compelled to share with you. So I guess it’s time to bring back Video Wednesday for a bit, right?
Up first is a brand new video from Ansley entitled “Lighthouse”. There’s a definite campiness to the video, with multiple shots of Ansley in beach and nautical themed shots. If you’re wanting a profound statement in a video, then “Lighthouse” is likely too light for your taste. If, however, you like lo-fi artistic fun with a catchy tune, then you’ll want to catch the Ansley wave on this one.
The Ghost has a soft spot for shoegaze. A very, very soft spot for that genre. My first taste of shoegaze was Lush’s “Sweetness and Light”. There’s more than a few hints of Lush in Austin’s shoegaze band Blushing. Their video for “The Truth” does not opt for visuals that match their dreamy sound, but instead shows the band having lots of fun. Throughout the course of their video, you can catch the band playing at an arcade, blowing bubbles, spraying silly string, and other assorted amusing activities. If the video is any indication, Blushing would be as fun to hang out with as they are to listen to. Blushing, if you’re reading this, please make a road trip to Dallas for a show. Before hand, The Ghost would love to play skee-ball and stuff with y’all. I’ll bring the quarters and silly string.
For the final video, the tone will take a 180° turn. The video for Tippy Balady’s “Merry Go Round” is an exceptionally candid representation of life with anxiety. Before the song starts, you see several snippets of individuals (including Ms. Balady) describing anxiety in their own words. The music then begins, and the video alternates between Tippy singing and dancer Ava Nobel fighting off individuals that represent fears and insecurities. This is a case of an intensely powerful track being matched with an equally impressive visual story line. Props to Hi Hat Productions for a video that has thrown down the gauntlet, daring anyone else to create a more impactful video this year.
