Special Playlist: Emmeline’s Birthday Playlist

Birthdays aren’t the same right now. There are no big celebrations, no nights on the town (unless you’re just cruising), and you’ll have to blow out the candles by yourself. As a result, we have to be a little more creative as to how we help our friends celebrate this special day.

One of my favorite human beings within the world of local music would have to be Emmeline. Not only is she one of the area’s strongest singer-songwriters, she’s smart, caring, and in general the kind of person you’d want in your close circle of friends. She will not be able to surround herself with live music tonight the way she’d like to (even though I’ll bet she watches tonight’s Opening Bell Open Mic online). Instead of live music, she will have to settle for livestreams, pre-recorded videos, and streaming tunes. That’s where my idea comes in.

Several weeks ago on Facebook, I posted a list of ten of my favorite local artists. I had hoped more people will follow my cue and post their own list. Only one person posted their list to their timeline, and that person was Emmeline. The playlist I’ve made for Emmeline features nine of the ten artists listed, as well as a few other favorites of hers that I know because, well, we talk music. A lot. In addition, I’m throwing in a few songs that I don’t think she knows yet. It’s my hope that she’ll later thank me for turning her onto those tunes. Oh, and I used Emmeline songs as bookends for the playlist; it only seems appropriate.

  • Monday Mixteen: 5/18/2020 This past Saturday, former President Obama was the commencement speaker, so to speak, for the graduating Class of 2020.  It is certainly unorthodox to have a former President give a commencement speech to a nation of graduates.  These times, however, have been anything but orthodox. So, continuing in that unorthodox vain, why not do a [...]
  • Monday Mixteen: 5/4/2020 As this month began, Governor Abbott officially started the process of reopening the state.  Malls and restaurants are among the places that have been reopened, albeit with restrictions.  Personally, The Ghost recommends you follow the hidden advice within a previous playlist, but that’s just my two cents worth. Whether the restrictions remain lifted, or the [...]
  • Monday Mixteen: 4/20/20 You’d think that The Ghost might do some sort of clever 4/20 theme on the Monday Mixteen, but you’d be wrong.  I mean, if you want, I can post my favorite Tomorrowpeople song in honor of the day.  Here you go… Feeling better now? OK, now onto the real Monday Mixteen. I came up with [...]
  • Monday Mixteen: 4/6/2020 Yes, 2020 has been a challenging year for all of us.  It has been a year that has taken a toll on the human race because of COVID-19.  That virus that hit the health (both physical and mental) and the economy hard.  Indeed, COVID-19 has made 2020 one of the most difficult years of my [...]
